Cantonese in Ireland at Dragon Boat Races in Carlow 2024
Our Cantonese in Ireland Dragon Boat Team 'Cheung Po Tsai' participated in the dragon boat race organised by @irishdragonboat in Carlow last Sunday (June 9th).
We are honoured to be invited to perform the eye dotting at the eye-dotting ceremony. Vice-chairperson Alice and Captain Philip dotted the eye of the dragon boat and the participated in the ritual of throwing the sticky rice dumplings (zung3 糭) into the river.
So glad that the traditional Cantonese customs of the Dragon Boat Festival was showcased to everyone.
We want to give a big thank to our anonymous calligrapher who wrote three calligraphy scrolls with phrases related to navigation: "Sailing with the Current" (seon6 seoi2 hang4 zau1 順水行舟), "Together in the Same Boat" (tung4 zau1 gung6 zai3 同舟共濟), and "Riding the Waves" (sing4 fung1 po3 long6 乘風破浪).
Thanks to @irishdragonboat 's arrangement, Alice got the chance to read the phrases in CANTONESE and explained their meanings in English to our Irish public too! These three calligraphy scrolls were given to the three winning teams.
An incense offering ceremony was carried out before we raced.
We would like to thank dublinvikings for the trainings many Saturdays before the race. Some members said that Dragon Boating is addictive!
And thousands thanks to our team members for their hard work and sweat, giving their all in the chilly weather. We couldn't forget to thank the supporters who came, loudly cheering us on and taking so many nice photos for us.

我哋嘅<<張保仔>>龍舟隊喺上星期日 6月9號 參加咗由愛爾蘭龍舟協會喺Carlow舉辦嘅龍舟賽 。
朝頭早嘅點睛儀式，仲有我哋嘅代表︰副會長Alice 以及隊長 Philip 幫大會進行龍舟點睛儀式。點睛之後，又拋糭入河，向大家示範一下傳統端午節嘅民間習俗。
超級多謝無名書法家𧶽字，寫咗三幅書法掛畫，字詞同航海有關，非常有意思︰順水行舟，同舟共濟，乘風破浪。
好感激愛爾蘭龍舟協會俾個機會我哋嘅Alice，可以喺會場度同一大班市民用廣東話讀出字詞，並以英文解釋詞嘅意思。呢三幅書法掛畫仲送咗俾三組勝出嘅隊伍添。
而我哋嘅隊伍亦係比賽前進行咗簡單嘅上香儀式，好玩又保存咗扒傳統扒龍舟嘅民間習俗。
非常感謝謝我哋隊員出力出汗，係比較凍嘅天氣下全力衝刺。
當然亦都唔少唏咗支持我哋嘅朋友，大大聲叫加油，又影咗好多好靚嘅相。
