Cantonese in Ireland Ulysses Reading at Sweny’s

Cantonese in Ireland presents a Cantonese reading evening at Sweny’s, a 19th-century pharmacy (now a store selling books and lemon soap and historical venue) which is featured in James Joyce’s "Ulysses”.

A short translation by Dr. Sarah Lee will be read at the event. You can find the translated section from Ulysses here.

As well as the Cantonese readings, we will have English readings from Ulysses and the event will be hosted by P.J. from Sweny’s where guests are welcome to learn about the history of Sweny’s Pharmacy, James Joyce and of course, Leopold Bloom from Ulysses who visited the shop.

We will also announce the winners of our Bloomsday drawing, writing and translation competition.

Bloomsday Festival itself will be taking place on June 12th - 18th celebrating more than 100 years of Ulysses with readings, performances, walking tours, Bloomsday breakfast surrounded by people dressed in Edwardian clothes and more (see the festival programme). It’s not only celebrated in Dublin, but across the globe.

The Cantonese in Ireland Ulysses Reading at Sweny’s is an in-person event, and will not be streamed.

<<粵語。愛爾蘭>>喺嚟緊嘅六月九號黃昏將會喺Sweny’s 舉行一個粵語讀書會。Sweny’s喺十九世紀係一間藥房，James Joyce嗰本大師級創作<<尤利西斯>>就提起過呢間小店，宜家呢間小店唔再賣藥，改為賣書賣檸檬香皂，仲係一個好有歷史意義嘅名勝地。

到時我哋會一齊讀由李博士翻譯做粵文嘅選段。

除咗粵文，我哋都會有英文選段。活動會由Sweny’s嘅P.J.主持。佢會話俾大家知Sweny’s嘅歷史，James Joyce嘅人生，當然唔少得Ulysses主角Leopold Bloom嘅故事啦。

當日我哋仲會宣佈我哋Bloomsday繪畫、寫作及翻譯比賽嘅得獎者。

Bloomsday Festival 本身仲喺六月十二號到六月十八號搞咗一連串嘅慶祝活動，包括讀書會、藝術表演、徒步遊，Bloomsday早餐等等。好多人會著住愛德華時期嘅服飾行嚟行去，好有氣氛又得意。呢個本來小規模嘅慶祝已經慢慢演變成一個國際節慶，全球好多地方都會一齊慶祝。

我哋今次嘅活動係一個實體活動，要求大家親身參與，實質體驗Bloomsday嘅樂趣。活動費用全免。
