“Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can.” – Danny Kaye

— Danny Kaye

Hi, I’m Wai-Hang. Since moving to Ireland, three moments stand out as the brightest strokes on my life canvas!

Continuing my profession here has brought me immense fulfillment and stability for my family. The journey was challenging, but achieving it felt like laying a solid foundation for the next chapters of my life.

The night before our baby was born, I drove Heidi to the hospital. Every traffic light turned green, and in that instant, I realised I was about to become a father. Excitement and responsibility surged at once, like the first bold stroke on a blank canvas.

Hong Kong will always be home. My parents painted the basic colors of my life, giving me roots and guidance. I regret not sharing more moments with them now, yet their foundation shapes the colours I pass on to my son.

Looking back, I realise that life is a canvas we paint with our choices, our efforts, and the love we share. Being a “life painter” means embracing both the colours we choose and the spaces we cannot fill, yet still striving to create a meaningful, resonant picture. Perhaps that’s the part we all share... the hope that what we build today...step by step, with courage and care...will give those who come after us a brighter, more colourful tomorrow. That, to me, is the part that truly resonates.

Heidi (remark: interviewed last time, Rhyse's wife) and myself started volunteering with the Cantonese community in Ireland to make friends from Hong Kong, which gave us a solid foundation to expand our social circle. From day one, our goal was to connect with people from all over the world, meeting fellow home comers first gave us a sense of familiarity, and from there, we made friends across different nationalities.

What’s cool is we’ve always preferred to volunteer quietly behind the scenes. We join events when it suits us, enjoy helping out without being in the spotlight, and just being part of the experience. Three years on, that’s still how we like to do it..it’s fun, low-pressure, and really rewarding.

I want to keep doing things I probably wouldn’t do in Hong Kong and simply enjoy life in new ways. It keeps things fun and helps me stay open to new experiences. I also hope my son will grow up feeling warmly welcomed as part of the Cantonese community in Ireland, so he can help maintain, promote, and develop our Cantonese traditions in the future.

You’ll see how he grows, flourishing in this land as if he’s always belonged here, yet always carrying a Hong Kong soul.
