Cantonese in Ireland: Cantonese Culture Workshop at Killinardan Community School (Dublin)
Last Thursday, November 13th, a few volunteers from Cantonese in Ireland visited Killinardan Community School in Dublin to run a Cantonese culture workshop for 19 Transition Year students. At the school entrance we saw multilingual welcome signs, and “歡迎” was even written in traditional characters. Such a warm touch!
A bit of fun etymology: in the character 「歡」, 「雚」 serves as both sound and image, symbolising a falcon, while 「欠」 represents an open mouth, exclaiming in excitement. In bronze inscriptions, the original meaning describes a falcon spotting prey and calling out joyfully. Traditional characters preserve these visual clues, giving the word a vivid sense of imagery.

上星期四，十一月十三號，粵語愛爾蘭幾個義工去咗都柏林 Killinardan Community School，為 19 位 Transition Year 同學搞咗個粵語文化工作坊。一入校門就見到多語歡迎牌，「歡迎」仲用繁體，好窩心！
講多少少冷知識：「歡」字嘅「雚」係聲旁亦係形旁，象徵獵鷹；「欠」代表張口、興嘆。金文原義係獵鷹見到獵物而興奮呼叫。繁體字保留咗呢啲線索，畫面感十足。
