Max Yu
Hi, I'm Max. I've been living in Ireland for two and a half years
I was born in Hong Kong and later moved to Singapore and Australia. I'm a behavioural scientist and an Assistant Professor. I relocated to Ireland after accepting an offer from Maynooth University. Brexit made Ireland an even more attractive destination, and so far, I believe I’ve made the right choice.
Do you know that Max is our fresh new chairperson of committee of Cantonese in Ireland this year? Let's hear what he has to share with us: 一齊嚟聽吓佢嘅分享:
I came across the Cantonese in Ireland website while searching for Hong Kong or Cantonese-based social groups for my wife. We attended a gathering at CHQ and made some friends. One thing led to another, and I joined the committee a few months later.
Since joining the committee, I’ve been working with others to develop a practical long-term strategy that aligns with our mission and values. This includes improving brand clarity and creating a sustainability plan. As the Communications Officer for the past two years, I was the main point of contact with the public, and I also helped secure funding and organize events.
Now, as the new Chairperson, I hope Cantonese in Ireland can continue to support Cantonese immigrants, preserve the language, and share our culture. My wife and I have benefitted greatly from the community in many ways, and we hope to give back.
